Dance & Performance
Mette Ingvartsen & Will Guthrie

All Around

Mette Ingvartsen

is a Danish choreographer and dancer. Her work is characterised by hybridity and extends choreographic practices by combining dance and movement with other domains such as visual arts, technology, language and theory. Since establishing her company in 2003, her work has been presented widely throughout Europe, as well as in the US, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia. An important strand of her work was developed between 2009 and 2012 with The Artificial Nature Series, in which she focused on reconfiguring relations between human and non-human agency through choreography. By contrast, her series, The Red Pieces (2014–2017), inscribes itself into a history of human performance with a focus on nudity, sexuality and how the body historically has been a site for political struggles. Most recently, she showed The Dancing Public at TQW, a solo about the phenomenon of ‘dance crazes’ repeatedly reappearing over the centuries.

All Around

Centring on themes of intoxication, transformation and cure, Tanzquartier Wien presents All Around by choreographer and dancer Mette Ingvartsen and percussionist Will Guthrie in the context of the Musikverein festival Beethovens Medizinlöffel.

In All Around, spinning and turning, rhythm and speed become the main components of a performance that drives towards an ecstatic and trance-like intensity. ‘This piece feels like a cure for all the negative effects which control our times. It works like an energy injection’, says Mette Ingvartsen.

Will Guthrie and Mette Ingvartsen have followed each other’s work and collaborated at a distance over the past five years. In this drum/dance/duo, they perform live together for the first time, bringing their respective disciplines into proximity. The result is a fusion of forms: a music concert with dance. In All Around, the audience encircles a performance space inhabited by a drum kit, a moving light and the performers’ bodies.
