COME OUT

‘This is an allegory about our battles. With our lives, for hope, for love … COME OUT is about that drive, the impulse to go into a battle, that moment when the music begins, distorting itself, dissipating, then rebuilding itself after waves of turbulence.’ – Olivier Dubois

A hypnotic ballet for 21 dancers to a legendary composition by Steve Reich. Olivier Dubois originally created COME OUT in 2019 for the acclaimed ensemble of the Ballet de Lorraine. In 2023, he developed a new version with dancers from the Salzburg-based BODHI PROJECT. The central element of the choreography is the music piece of the same name, composed in 1966, in which Steve Reich reflected on racist police misconduct. To do so, the pioneer of minimal music collaged voice recordings of a young African American man allegedly involved in a gang murder in Harlem, who was tortured in police custody, which in turn triggered a public outcry. Inspired by the continuing political relevance of the topic, Dubois has developed a captivating choreography: gruelling by way of repetition, variation, and accumulation, COME OUT fascinates with its strong presence, its geometry, its surges and divergences. In perfect coherence, the performers impress the audience with their uniqueness, and yet, at the end, they all speak with one voice.
