Knight-Night

Bryana Fritz

is a choreographer, dancer, and writer. She works at the intersection between literature and performance, often in duet with the user interface of OS X. Her work is fed by a continued interest in medieval literature, fan fiction, media studies, and histories of illiteracy. She also collaborates with Henry Andersen under the moniker Slow Reading Club.

Thibault Lac,

a dancer in pieces by Ligia Lewis, Noé Soulier, Daniel Linehan, Mathilde Monnier, Alexandra Bachzetsis, Daniel Jeanneteau and Price, is a recurring presence in the work of American choreographer Trajal Harrell. He also engages in collaborative projects as an author: Knight-Night, co-created with Bryana Fritz; Fool’s Gold, co-created with Tobias Koch; and Such Sweet Thunder, created in collaboration with visual artist Tore Wallert and composer Tobias Koch, and recipient of the Young Choreographer’s Prize at the ImPulsTanz Festival in Vienna.

Knight-Night

Bryana Fritz and Thibault Lac take on the iconic figure of Don Quixote. Knight-Night decentres Cervantes’ text in favour of a plurality of versions – notably, Kathy Acker’s 1986 text, in which the knight embarks on the most insane idea that any woman can think of, which is...to love.

The two performers bring together fragmented embodiments of Don Quixotes, not forgetting the infamous sidekick Sancho Panza, sometimes friend, sometimes accomplice, sometimes horse. Identities slip. The narrative explodes. The audience, present on stage, has a sideways saddle onto this queer, feminist quest for the elusive, fleeting figure of a knight under the flags of fiction and reality.

Artist Talk following the performance on Sun 18.02. Tom Engels (artistic director of Grazer Kunstverein) in conversation with Bryana Fritz and Thibault Lac. The talk will be held in English.
