L’Onde

Nacera Belaza

was born in Algeria and has been living in France since the age of five. After studying literature in Reims, she founded her own company in 1989. She was honoured with a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2015. Belaza entered the world of dance as a self-taught artist, developing choreographies that are based on an inner journey, a sensitive listening to the body, to space and to the emptiness within. Repetition of gesture, infinite slowness, extension of time: All her pieces explore movement as one would explore a serene, deep breath that contrasts with the “deafening noise of our existences”. From master classes to site-specific performances, her desire to share and transmit has crystallized around her relationship with audiences and their territories. In a continual to-and-fro between two shores, Belaza develops her company work in France and has founded an artistic cooperative in Algeria. Her company presents its pieces internationally with a regular presence in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America.

L’Onde

„In all my pieces, I aspire for unity, a relationship with everything, with the other, with letting go …“ — Nacera Belaza

Franco-Algerian choreographer Nacera Belaza explores the ancient rituals that have always influenced her work. Being and infinity, the spinning of space and time, and the origin of self-transcendence come to haunt this unique dance that awakens the fundamental pulse and moving images from ancient times. Nacera Belaza’s dance is more of an inner journey than a pictorial illustration. Abstract and carnal, powerful and diaphanous, organic and open to the infinite, she starts from the void to project herself into the unknown, in search of a breath or a pulse that is as free as it is regenerative and revitalizing. Her choreographic work organises a lively dialogue between Algerian and European cultures, between spirituality and image, movement and imagination.

For this creation, she was inspired by audiovisual archives of traditional rituals. While formally transcending these rituals, she retains a state, a tension, a way of being in the world consisting of inner peace, of letting go and welcoming the infinite within oneself – and animated by a pulsating rhythm that links the soul to space and time. Carried by a soundtrack that blends tradition and modernity, up to the point of confusion, this piece for five dancers explores once again the power of the transformation of the body through imagination, through the force of consciousness and spirit, and invites you to be part of a new serenity.
