Mapping of Relations

Performance, Inspiration, Influences, Theories
Performatorium

is a lab for practice-oriented artistic research and a duo consisting of artists and researchers Olivia Jaques and Marlies Surtmann. Jaques/Surtmann have collaborated for the past ten years. While being part of the artist-curator* collective Friday Exit (2012–2016), they experimented with different exhibition and discourse formats, started a book club and established Performatorium in 2017. Performatorium’s research focuses on the networking of the local performance scene in Vienna. As an independent feminist* platform for performance, Performatorium used to be a place for collective experimentation and exchange. Currently, Performatorium is a lab for the development of artistic-performative research methods, activating and updating performances of the past.

Mapping of Relations

Performance, Inspiration, Influences, Theories
Olivia Jaques and Marlies Surtmann, otherwise known as the artistic research duo Performatorium, have invested a lot of time into their long-term research project about the performance scene in and surrounding Vienna, mapping, documenting and retelling its stories. This work-in-progress research was used as basis for a map but also for workshops which deal with the accumulation and transfer of knowledge and performative practices. The main focus is on the practitioners’ positions and the connections between key points on the map, as they reveal a network in constant change. In the context of TQW Research Affiliation, the duo will continue their work on the map and focus on one key point and specific story: a performance from the Tanzquartier Wien archive. In reference to Daina Taylor’s concept of scenario and using embodied knowledge and oral history, they will develop an artistic-performative approach to archive material and analyze the reenactment of performances and practices of the past.
