Mahler’s second symphony: a monumental and epochal opus. One determined to go to any lengths – which meant for Gustav Mahler: to ask the most profound and final questions. How can we live in the face of death? What does it mean to die? Mahler’s response is positively vibrant: ‘I’ll die to live!’ The second symphony, therefore, takes its name from the final apotheosis and is known as the ‘Resurrection Symphony’. The performance is one of the highlights of the festival Beethovens Medizinlöffel at the Wiener Musikverein – based on a specific object from the world-renowned collection of the Musikverein, Beethoven’s medicine spoon, the festival’s thematic focus lies on illness and cure, revitalisation and transformation. Thanks to Mark Andre, ‘Composer in Focus’ of the 2022/23 season at the Wiener Musikverein, another musical work will precede the performance of Mahler’s second symphony. How will it change our perspective on Mahler’s fascinating and monumental piece?
