ROMABARON – NO G**** BARON

A dismantling in three acts, inspired by Johann Strauss

ROMABARON – NO G**** BARON is a radical reinterpretation of Johann Strauss’ famous operetta. It challenges the stereotypes of the original version that continue to have an effect today, in particular clichéd images of the Roma, and makes suppressed realities visible in an alternative narrative. The piece centres around a young Turkish Romni who explores her identity, her culture and her self-determination.

In his production, director Alireza Daryanavard throws light on social power relations and ongoing discrimination. The music by Mahan Mirarab combines classical and contemporary styles, electronica and the great variety of Roma music. It is interpreted live by renowned singers Golnar Shahyar, Sakina Teyna, Özlem Bulut and Basma Jabr.

Artist Talk following the performance on Sat 12.04. Steffen Jäger, professor at the Max Reinhardt Seminar – Department of Drama, in conversation with participants in the production. In German.
