Masoumeh Jalalieh

A dialogue of patterns

Masoumeh Jalalieh

is a Vienna-based choreographer and dancer with a background in physical theatre (mime), graphic design, and illustration. Her approach to dance is undoubtedly interwoven with her homeland Iran’s society, culture, and ritual carpet. ‘I carry my origins with me and thus communicate myself, my country, and its people through my artistic statements.’ As a contemporary artist, she likes researching interdisciplinary codes in images, sounds, and movement. ‘The body is a complicated collection of all elements of nature, such as time, space, speed, etc. I explore those through movement. This way, I communicate my imagination using the ultimate language human beings have at their disposal.’

A dialogue of patterns

Do you move your body, or does your body move you? Do you know exactly what makes your way of moving yours? What is the role of your parents, ancestors, culture, and the society you come from? What if you looked a bit deeper into this pattern? How may this context affect your motifs for moving, and what if you change some aspects of it?

Masoumeh Jalalieh invites you to explore and develop your own language of movement based on observation, analysis, and improvisation techniques. You will explore your own idea of what dance can be for you, what you want from it, and why you feel the need to dance. In relation to this, the workshop will propose other tools to nourish your language of movement.

‘It all started with those little ceramic blocks on our living room floor, where I had a little privacy and a mirror to practice mime and theatre. Back then, I could never have imagined becoming a dancer. When the room suggests you move less, what will you invent then? I spent many hours in front of the mirror trying to find my way of moving and daring to accept that stillness is also a way of dancing. In this workshop talk, I will share my journey so far, the challenges and opportunities I have faced, and some of the stories that have influenced my path.’
