Aural Etudes
Aural Etudes are an invitation to welcome musical knowledge into our bodies, to be in the company of musical ancestors and to learn from their diverse and multi-faceted expressions by copying, or embodying, what we hear.
The action of copying, which can be understood through its etymology as to be with resources, to abound, to be [with] many, in relation, not alone, is central here as a tool to learn from another without understanding, comprehending or owning this other.
The class starts with short exercises inspired by musical scales to tune in with our bodies. It then embarks on a journey of improvised explorations following various pieces of music from different genres with the simple idea of copying sound as dance.
Growing up in a musicians’ family, musical forms have been around his sensibility and attention long before he started diving into dance. Today, he passionately investigates ways of putting these familiar forms into play within a choreographic context. Samuel has been signing dance works since 2012.
Samuel holds a Bachelor in contemporary dance from the Amsterdam University of the Arts and a Master in choreography from DOCH in Stockholm.
