Being and Seeing

Contemporary Training
Melanie Maar

was born in Vienna, Austria. Her work grows out of exploring intimacy between the phenomenal and the material within performances, group happenings and one-on-one encounters. In 2015, Maar was awarded the Grant to Artists from John Cage’s and Jasper Johns’ New York Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Her performance work has been presented in Vienna, Berlin, Mexico City and New York, where she is also teaching and mentoring through her process as guide series.

Growing up in her mother’s dance studio has deeply influenced her own dance learning. Recently she taught improvisation at Movement Research and The New School in New York. Currently she co-organizes the Entkunstung performance series in Vienna together with Felipe Duque.

Being and Seeing

Contemporary Training

This training offers a context for dedicated dance people to practice self-guidance. It is based on a mellow improvisational approach to sense-reflection.

Rather than sharing established aesthetics of perception, this training will
connect us with our individual way of seeing, being and relating.
An interest in “not knowing” seems essential.

Through guided self-guiding, movement exercises and partner touch scores we will engage in and explore relationships between our internal and external realms.

Being and Seeing is based on: chaos and intellect / desire and presence / feeling oneself and one another / struggle and space / non-linear time / object and subject / attunement and implicit knowing / feelingness and formness / cooperative making and dissolving / performing and permeating

… is what draws me to dance and its various voices and practices.

Diverse bodies/minds are welcome into this environment in which we continuously practice to trust ourselves and to ready each other for what is happening.
