Steve Paxton developed Material for the Spine (MFS) beginning in 1986 after contact improvisation as an exploration of the movement possibilities within the muscles surrounding the spine, as well as the connections between the head, pelvis, vertebrae, scapula and hands. This solo practice is supported by specific exercises, body puzzles and ideokinetic imagery. Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen began developing by Body-Mind Centering® in the early 1970s. BMC is a highly experiential, somatic approach to embodiment, movement and consciousness that works with the conscious embodiment of anatomical, physiological, psychophysical, embryological and developmental principles through guided movement, intentional touch, voice, and a developing awareness of the play of conscious attention, or mind. This class series will play with mutually supporting material from BMC and MFS to access deep functional movement to be used for dancing.
