Maria F. Scaroni

is a dance artist. She interprets choreographic works, creates dance and hosts dance workshops. Since 2004, she has been living in Berlin where she works as a freelance dancer performing/creating works with Jess Curtis, Jeremy Wade, Frank Willens and Tino Sehgal, among others. Scaroni has been collaborating with Meg Stuart since 2011. They both share a commitment to improvisation as a performative event.

Her choreographic works focus on te process of collaboration, play with durational experiences and blend performance, choreography and installation. Maria teaches at Berlin’s HZT university and is involved in developing independent training programmes (P.O.R.C.H. and Smash) that involve researching the body as material. She holds a master’s degree in modern Italian literature and wrote a thesis on education and dance.

body/material

The body work I facilitate invites the participants to look at and treat the body as material, examining its organic functions and spiritual potential as well as its cultural implications. The nature of the approach is eclectic and has emerged from techniques of cultivating the “chi” such as Qi Gong and Pranayama (breathing techniques), exploring spine and limb patterns (body connectivity, proprioceptive systems), hands-on work (experimental body alchemy approach after Sara Shelton Mann) and elements of improvisation to achieve transformation by going through various states. I use journeys of the mind and extended duration (either literal trance exercises drawn from dynamic meditation practices or shamanic journeys using visualisation and movement) to flirt with the notion of ritual and personal/collective transformation, relying on trance and exertion, boredom and contemplation as tactics. The goal is to come to an understanding or to a state of questioning the limits of the body, acknowledging it as diverse and idiosyncratic: codified, yet desirous of ecstasy and play, seeking grounding and tenderness.
