‘Improvising starts for me with the tension of the space held by the architecture, the people with whom you improvise, and the audience. I follow my impulses by acting, reacting, and listening to the tension. And through a chain of these impulses, I look for a flow to create. It is a delicate balance between getting into trance and staying devoted to the task to find an overall composition that communicates. Every sound is possible, melodies or noise, style, or genre, although I avoid my work from becoming too cheesy. I need the unexpected. Sounds coming out of the instrument that I had never heard before, bring me to new areas of imagination and creation. Working with technical devices connected to the cello allows me to improvise with loops and sound effects, generating a journey through various multi-layered soundscapes. It must touch me emotionally; then only I can tell something by playing my cello.’ – Laura Pudelek
