Blindance: Jump With Me Into Darkness

Saïd Gharbi

was born in Morocco and moved to Belgium with his family in the late 1960s. He became blind at the age of 14. As a young adult, Saïd met the Flemish choreographer Wim Vandekeybus / Ultima Vez in 1992, who was looking for blind dancers for one of his productions. After numerous collaborations with Vandekeybus between 1992 and 2001, Saïd founded his company Les BGM and created dance theatre pieces with Ana Stegnar. Saïd has been working as a dancer or actor for more than two decades for various dance/theatre productions in Belgium and abroad. He also teaches Blindance at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp and gives sensitisation workshops for different associations.

Blindance: Jump With Me Into Darkness

We will explore the state of blindness, moving through the space while adopting strategies permitting us to feel safe. While we move, we will observe what we feel and listen to the space around us. Encountering other people, music, rhythm, the immense space and time that lies within the state of blindness. Letting go in order to let ourselves be moved.

We will find the confidence to dive into sensations, trust, and become attentive, soft, playful, and fearless. We will create and share with others, being open to the present moment.

As a blind person, I often take more risks in spaces I don’t know.

As a dancer, I need to have entire confidence in my partner as well as my partner in me.
