It is expected of artists to be able to talk and write about their work. They are asked for artist statements, essays, application texts, short bios, manifestos, titles, social media posts, press releases, lectures, pamphlets and interviews. Let us not forget, however, that writing and talking about one’s own art practice is completely different to writing and talking about someone else’s art. How can I talk about my art without being patronizing? How can I translate a performative piece into text? What kind of texts contain artistic knowledge? And why does Louise Bourgeois peel a mandarin orange? We will find answers to these and other questions in the form of texts by artists who we will approach and examine with our own writing.
In addition to Louise Bourgeois peels a mandarin orange, you can also book the workshop on losing your tongue. Both workshops will be conducted in German, with texts in both German and English language.
b. 1986, is a performance and voice artist whose practice involves memory work, performative monuments and ritual design. Her performances and texts make specific use of such elements as ellipsis and obfuscation. In her work, the hidden elements are just as important as the obvious ones. She has received numerous awards, most recently the BMKÖS Staatsstipendium 2021 and the Theodor Körner Prize 2020. Strauß has been teaching artists how to talk, write and be silent about their work at Kunstuniversität Linz since 2015.
