Morning Practice

Malika Fankha

studied theatre in Zurich and contemporary dance at SEAD (Salzburg) and at the Tisch School of Performing Arts (New York). She works internationally as a dancer, choreographer, sound poet and DJ. Her performative work aims to blur the hierarchies between genres, to collapse the threshold of binary and normative social codes such as male and female, artificial and human, intimacy and representation.

Among others, she has been collaborating with SUPERAMAS, Tino Sehgal, Deborah Hazler, Saar Magal, Valérie Reding and Maureen Kaegi. Besides her background as a dancer, her classes are strongly influenced by her experience in Shaolin Kung Fu, Qi Gong and various anarchic styles of Yoga asana and breathwork which she has been practicing and teaching for more than ten years.

Morning Practice

This Morning Practice is a strong, heat-inducing practice that interweaves elements of Shaolin Kung Fu, Release Technique and Vinyasa into a dynamic flow using the rotations, turns and spirals inherent in our anatomical structure. By challenging our proprioceptive balance and micro coordination skills we aim to increase and expand our movement vocabulary and step beyond perceived limits. Focusing on the interplay between high-speed strength stemming from Martial Arts, correct alignment and pliability as well as the constant dialogue between gravity and our own bodyweight will enable us to move with more ease and efficiency and adjust the level of intensity individually at any given moment. We will navigate through repeated elements and gradually build up a choreographed sequence using different dynamics and combining floor work, animal styles and vertical alignment into a continuous, challenging yet accessible flow – an invigorating, empowering way that shifts the energy and prepares both mind and body for whatever comes up throughout the rest of the day. All levels welcome.
