Over the course of her artistic career, dancer and performer Leonie Wahl has developed a training programme that has proven efficient for herself. It serves as a physical and mental preparation for a day of rehearsal, for performances and to functionally maintain physical fitness.
It’s a training that contrasts with her powerful and dynamic work – a counterbalance, as it were. Because only by experiencing and maintaining inner calm are we able to release energy and intense emotions and can coordinate complex physical processes.
One part of the training consists of passive stretching exercises and slow movements with a focus on controlling breathing, increasing body awareness, activating the body’s meridians and deep musculature. Another part combines exercises for building up strength to strengthen the musculature and also includes elements of yoga. The final part comprises units of free movement.
The idea is to experience the whole range of movements: from total relaxation to the point of utmost readiness for physical action.
