Noh Theatre Workshop
The Noh Theatre Workshop at Tanzquartier Wien will give a theoretical and practical overview of the most important elements of Noh dance.
In his workshop, well-known Noh actor Haruhisa Kawamura from Kyoto will present the basic postures in Noh (standing, kneeling, and some forms of movements like walking, turning, jumping and dancing) involving the participants to experience these forms actively. Gestures in Noh will also be practised. They are highly stylized but carry with them deep emotional meaning. In this context, the use of the fan and the way a Noh mask is put on and worn during movements will be given a practical information on a basic level. The way Noh texts are chanted is another essential feature of Noh theatre. Two or three examples will be taught and practised and their function in a particular play as well as their broader cultural background will be explained.

born in 1956, is a Japanese Noh actor. In 2001, he was officially designated as a “Living National Treasure” by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan. Haruhisa Kawamura is one of the best-known custodians of the Kyoto Noh theatre school and an active member of influential Japanese associations for preserving the traditions of Noh theatre.
He pays much attention to the popularization and research of Noh traditions in different countries worldwide. Kawamura teaches at various universities and conducts and organizes master classes in Noh theatre.
