o! narrative spaces and gestures of sound

Eva Maria Schaller

is a dancer from Vienna, where she started to dance from early on. Her choreographic work is intensely engaged in the field of Austrian modernist dance heritage and forgotten female histories, archive, and un-archiving, as well as the transmission of knowledge in and through dance. In her dance practice, she further explores the connection between movement and voice as ways of including the dancers’ voice and agency and touches on notions such as musicality, narrative, expressivity, biography and the fantastic. She trained in classical ballet at the Vienna State Opera and contemporary dance at Codarts Rotterdam. In 2023, she completed her MA in New Performative Practices at the Stockholm University of the Arts. Since 2016, she has been teaching Countertechnique and workshops across Europe and as a regular guest at the MUK – Music and Arts University Vienna.

o! narrative spaces and gestures of sound

How does dance speak? What do movements mean – to me, to you and others? In this workshop, the focus will be shifted away from the visual and representative aspects of performing towards a curiosity for ‘what we hold inside’ – internal experiences, possible expressions, and translations as dance. Through her choreographic work and practice, Eva Maria Schaller thoroughly engages within the field of dance heritage and female histories, relating specific approaches of Modernist dance to contemporary movement practices and bridging them to personal histories of dance.

In these workshop sessions, she invites the participants to work with notions of volume, sense of space, perception, musicality, weight, and flow. Following and relating to these elements, practices related to the dancers’ voices will be introduced as manifold ways of poetic moving. This way, Schaller will share current artistic processes exploring how sensations, feelings and moods can be transformed through movement – in order to let emerge layers of the fantastic, imaginative, and narrative space around us. As a dancer, Eva Maria Schaller deals with where and how we can find places for the pleasures of virtuosity and abundance between a personal and a collective practice of togetherness.
