Performing Words

A workshop series on text and performance
Anna Mendelssohn

(born 1976 in Vienna) studied acting in Great Britain. She has been an ensemble member of the company toxic dreams since 2004. She has also performed with a number of choreographers and directors (such as Superamas, Oleg Soulimenko, David Mayaan, and many more), acted in films (by Miriam Bajtala, Michaela Schwentner, Thomas Marschall) and works as a voice-over artist.

In her own performance pieces (Cry Me A RiverHere and Now, WHAT ?, Feminism and the Bauchgefühl, Amazon – River Deep, among others) her special interest lies in a conscious and analytical exploration of language, its employment in social and political contexts and paying close attention to the forces and mechanisms of emotional manipulation, which may sometimes hide behind quite banal phrases or sentences.

Performing Words

A workshop series on text and performance

Words, letters, dots, commas, tempo, rhythm, pauses, humour, irony, power – what is in a text? How do we unfold potentials and let them resonate? In this training we will experiment with different techniques of approaching a text and finding ways to get it across to an audience. We will speak with and without microphone, we will improvise, read and speak freely, we will work with mental images, intention and body language and we will listen very closely to each other. This workshop series is for everyone interested in working with text on a stage. If you already have experience, this will be an opportunity to go deeper.

In the first workshop we will get familiar with some basic principles of voice, text analyses and text performance. All participants will work on the same text and we will discover and experiment with the endless multiplicity of meanings that can be found in a single text.

In workshop 2 everyone will have their own, different text. If you are currently working on or with text, you are more than welcome to bring it!

In workshop 3 we will deepen and refine the learnt techniques and finally free ourselves from them again.
