Performing Words

Anna Mendelssohn

(born 1976 in Vienna) studied acting in Great Britain. She has been an ensemble member of the company toxic dreams since 2004. She has also performed with a number of choreographers and directors (such as Superamas, Oleg Soulimenko, David Mayaan, and many more), acted in films (by Miriam Bajtala, Michaela Schwentner, Thomas Marschall) and works as a voice-over artist.

In her own performance pieces (Cry Me A River, Here and Now, WHAT ?, Feminism and the Bauchgefühl, Amazon – River Deep, among others) her special interest lies in a conscious and analytical exploration of language, its employment in social and political contexts and paying close attention to the forces and mechanisms of emotional manipulation, which may sometimes hide behind quite banal phrases or sentences.

Performing Words

Oprah Winfrey’s speech at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards was a true firework of emotional moments – an intoxicating example of the power of words and language. Tempo, rhythm, pauses – in this training we will experiment with different techniques of approaching a text and finding ways to get it across to an audience. This training is for everyone interested in working with text on a stage. If you already have experience, this will be an opportunity to go deeper. We will work with texts that you bring along, texts that I provide, and we will experiment with writing our own texts. We will analyse, copy, steal, appropriate, dismantle, decompose, mix and reconstruct texts and speeches (such as Oprah Winfrey’s). The art of rhetoric is powerful and very old.
