Release Ballet

Andrea Nagl

lives in Vienna and works as a freelance contemporary dancer, teacher, choreographer and as a cranial works practitioner. She has collaborated in dance with Editta Braun, Elio Gervasi, Silvia Both, Anna Schrefl, Benoît Lachambre and Tanz*Hotel/Bert Gstettner, among others, and was part of Compagnie Smafu/Elisabeth Orlowsky for ten years. She has been collaborating with Markus Wintersberger since 2006 and has been engaged in an intensive examination of the medium of video.

She is interested in exploring the possibilities of free improvisation and instant composition in relation to the respective spatial circumstances. Current projects centre around the subjects of nature-destruction, human-creation-machine, memory-brain-identity. She teaches contemporary/release and release ballet to professionals as well as laypeople.

Release Ballet

The class focuses on release principles and somatic approaches that allow our movements to become organic, expansive and sensuously fluid. The emphasis is not on “form” or traditional classical aesthetics but the opposite, its deconstruction through targeted questioning of one’s own dogmas with regard to “technique” and ballet (e.g. “core stability”, muscle power versus coordination, the need to tense all the muscles, etc.). The class begins with a “release part” to increase body awareness. This is followed by slow work at the barre. The turning exercises in the “centre” support the experience of freely flowing movement, encourage the dancers to occupy space, to develop musicality, dynamism and speed. The use of gravity, momentum and flow invites dancers to experience the joy of movement and the “feel of dancing” in ballet as well.
