Singe, Seele!

As part of its cooperation with Musikverein Wien’s Beethovens Medizinlöffel festival, Tanzquartier Wien offers two two-hour workshops exploring the healing power between sound and body. The singer, music therapist and vocal coach Johanna Zachhuber, who works at the Vienna Centre for Music Therapy Research and at Vienna General Hospital in addition to numerous concerts and opera productions, offers insight into working with the voice.

Music can overcome illness and pain, helps us get over states of suffering, and often makes us forget the suffering. It can make us cry, drive us to top performance in sports, calm us down, and make us happy or anxious. There is only one thing music never does: it never leaves us untouched. When using the voice, we choose the most direct means of expression available to man. The power of one’s voice in music touches one’s body and soul most directly.

This workshop will focus on the basic principles of singing: How to breathe? Where to locate my voice, and how to guide it? What story does my voice tell, and how do I sound when I am a soloist or in a group? Basic exercises and body and breathing techniques will help us prepare for singing and train the voice as an instrument. The exercises also create a trusting atmosphere. Singing creates a welcoming atmosphere, as songs give structure, and lyrics often play an important role therein. Songs are gateways to memories and hold a special meaning for everyone. The aim is to create a safe space through singing in which we will be able to enjoy the sound of our voices without pressure or performance goals.

No previous experience required. Feel free to bring your favourite songs!
