Slap ouwehoeren

an improvisation project about the art of getting nowhere in speech, movement and sound
Frans Poelstra:

“I started to work in the theatre when I was 18. Now I’m 67, and I have done and still do a lot of different things, but for this workshop it’s important to know that since 1980 (the beginning of my studies at SNDO) I regularly participated in (and also organized) dance-music improvisation performances. Improvisation has remained an important part of my performance practice, but over the years, I have developed a strong love-hate relationship with this form. I guess I’m not so interested in ‘real-time composition’, or ‘to be in the moment’, I need context, some reason.”

“Slap ouwehoeren” is a Dutch expression and means something like “to have a casual conversation with no real point”. I’m interested to see what happens, if a group of people consequently don’t work on something and are so-called “non-productive”. I don’t have a clear idea how to approach this workshop, but we’ll figure this out together doing pointless conversations, dances, drawings, etc. and being bored. The only concrete proposals I have, is to stay together as a group in the studio, ban electronics during the workshop and make lunch together (there’s a budget). And, to make the whole thing a little more exciting and in contradiction with the idea of the workshop, on Friday we’ll do a lecture demonstration in which we will explain the art of getting nowhere.
