Somatic Movement

Bac. Dieter Rehberg RSMT

is a performance artist, psychological counsellor (LSB), somatic movement therapist (ISMETA) and massage therapist. He has developed his method of bodywork by integrating various dance, bodywork and counselling techniques with many years’ experience as a somatic body therapist, movement educator and performance artist, and by including aspects of his theoretical and practical understanding of Buddhist teachings.

Rehberg has been working in his own practice for 15 years and has been teaching in many parts of the world. It is of great importance to him that his classes take place in an attentive and compassionate atmosphere, that no questions are left unanswered and that the contents are presented in a clear and straightforward manner.

“Somatic movement” has a specific meaning in the context of dance: it refers to techniques that focus on personal and physical experiences. Somatic practices are used to train the dancers’ proprioceptive abilities, improve their alignment and reduce the risk of injury. In the process, they increase the students’ awareness of their own sensations while dancing. In addition to verbal instructions, somatic practices may comprise tactile corrections, focussing on energy and process while relaxing the musculature which is habitually overtaxed. The use of somatic practices in dance training intends to enhance the understanding of one’s own “body” while one’s technique becomes more specific, more personal and more internalised.
