Language under the Hammer

Andrea Maurer’s

artistic endeavours are characterised by her playful approach to language. She uses her language material in various different ways and forms: letter-objects or spatial sentence structures, performative miniatures or installational stage design, poetic interventions at a typical Viennese Würstelstand or digging and brooding at building sites. Maurer studied in the sculpture class at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She has received numerous awards (H13 Prize for Performance, Salzburg Prize for Media Art). She is curator of Performance Passage – a Space for the Poetics of the In-between at MQ since 2020.

Language under the Hammer

In installational and situational settings, we will work with and on linguistic set pieces. We will use both hands and feet for this. In a manner of deconstruction, we will approach the studio space: tables, slips of paper, sentences, chair legs, words, walls, windows, bins, light switches, letters, various utensils, pot plants, newspapers, etc. We will do the following: we will move things, amass, take apart, pile up, discard, pick up, rearrange, break, twist and turn, cut out, assemble, lean on each other, etc.

Our spatial intervention, the use of various objects, words and fragments, will allow us to see the transformative potential of this tactile environment. It is thus also – or first and foremost – an exercise in awareness. As soon as the whole space descends into chaos, we will build provisional sentence-like structures to create a new order. These phrases might break apart or fall over or remain in place until they are cleared away, expanded or erased.

Over the course of our workshop, we will work on producing a whole inventory of activities, things, sounds, words, formations, sentence structures, etc. in order “to composition” performative miniatures. Analog / accompanying writing pieces will be composed: scripts, scores, diagrams, manuals, lists.
