The Many Dance

Lena Schattenberg

completed her studies in Modern Theatre Dance at the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in 2015 and has since worked as an independent artist with, among others, Rosas, Eva Borrmann, and Christoph Marthaler. She moved to Vienna in 2020, where she founded the Samuel Feldhandler company together with her long-term collaborator Samuel Feldhandler. Her first solo piece, The Many Piece, premiered at Tanzquartier Wien in 2022. Essential impulses for her work are her collaborative art practice, the weaving of and engagement with different materials and surroundings, as well as her curiosity for spontaneous and unforeseen events.

The Many Dance

In this class, we alternate between set exercises and improvisations, which I collected as quotes from other artists/choreographers/performers I have encountered along the way. In doing so, we train our ability to quickly change focus and face the unknown with an open mind. We practice exercises with fixed steps, working with directions in space, the gaze and musicality. We use improvisation, letting our body parts guide us and immersing ourselves entirely in our own universes. We physically challenge ourselves and our fellow dancers with these investigations while encountering aspects of our dance practice that were previously hidden away and want to be discovered now. I want to create a space for exploration, physical challenge, creative play and, above all, for the joy of dancing.
