The Quiet Workshop

Jefta van Dinther

is a choreographer and dancer working between Stockholm and Berlin. His work is characterized by a rigorous physical approach and always implies a staged research of movement itself. The moving body is the core of his practice but belongs to and interacts with a body of light, sound and materials. Central in his work is the question of what it means to be human, examined through its relation to society, community and environment but also to other forms of life such as the animal and other non-human entities.

Van Dinther’s performances reach out into metaphysical or otherworldly realms and deal with notions of illusion, the visible and the invisible, synaesthesia, darkness, labour, sex, the uncanny, affect, voice and image. In 2019 he premiered the performance The Quiet. Currently on tour are also Dark Field Analysis (2017), Protagonist (2016), THIS IS CONCRETE (2012) as well as GRIND (2011). Van Dinther is Associated Artist with Cullberg between 2019–2022.He teaches choreography at various international centres and educational programmes. He was appointed Senior Lecturer and Artistic Director at the MA programme in Choreography at DOCH (University of Dance and Circus in Stockholm) between 2012 and 2014.

The Quiet Workshop

The starting point of the workshop deals with what defines us as human. This is heightened both through a kind of hyperrealism of human behaviour but also by crossing over into territories that can be considered non-human. Memory is here seen as the very substance that makes up identity and personhood. By embodying memory as well as the lack of it, composite states of presences and absences are rendered visible.

“Through guided movement explorations and a layering of activities tasks and split attentions a complex choreography of meaning and relation emerges, existing in multiple spaces/places and times simultaneously. This practice is framed performatively, asking how they can be managed by the practitioner and at the same time holding the attention in the spectator”, says Jefta van Dinther.
